While the writer himself was vehemently xenophobic, homophobic and racist at a time in history that was equally such, modern-day Steampunk fiction, film and video games have taken great efforts to combat his beliefs through the act of reclamation (Lovecraft County, Bioshock, Sinking City, Call of Cthulhu, The Ballad of Black Tom).
As a queer, non-binary person I do not endorse or embrace the personal politics of Lovecraft but rather embrace the movement of reclaiming dark fiction and Steampunk ultimately as equality works for all. This is the pathway through personal change.
I encourage you to follow black, brown and indigenous creators as they reclaim the steampunk genre, not solely written by HPL, such as Victor LaValle.
